Paintings are polychromatic - found on walls and floors.
Most Frescos found in Pompeii- most in good state others damaged.
Best mosaic found in Sicily in a village called Piazza Armerina.

Wax death masks - When somebody important dies an wax is put on his face - take form of facial feature.

Roman Architecture
Domestic - Houses belonged to 2 classes -
Patricians ( Villas located in the countryside) Hadrian's villa.
Plebeians ( small houses in town center)
Public - Thermal baths used to clean body.
Gave importance to hygiene of body and socialization, people could meet whilst washing.
Plebeian baths - simple located in city center.
Patrician baths - decorated with mosaic and found in outskirts of main cities
Separate baths for man and woman.
Example - The baths of Caracalla belonged to patricians
Religious - Temples for gods
Used by everybody
Pantheon of Rome - temple dedicated to all gods.
Corinthian columns.
Circular opening in the center of roof - eye of Jupiter- presence of divinity in sacred place as light passed through it.
Commemorative- Build in memory of something.
Arches - To commemorate different emperors who managed to expand empire.
Order, symmetry, definiteness, Scenes from important battles- when emperor won battle he would walk through arch.
Arches with one opening - Arch of the Emperor Titus.
Arches with three openings - Arch of Constantine in coliseum.
Columns - Corinthian however has square base and flat top part, where they placed statue of person. The higher the column the most important the person.
Roman Sculpture
Equestrian statues - Statue with presence of a horse.
They loved horses- transport, helped fight wars,
Complemented human figure symbolizing physical power.
Example - Marcus Aurelius - horse in contrapposto
Reliefs - Sculptures jutting out of flat surfaces, Patrician villas and tombs.
Scenes from wars of mythological characters come out as 3D shape.
Example - Seasonal Bacchus.
