Topic 6.2: The Blood System
The heart
4 chambers
Ventricles
Atrium
Valve
Tricuspid valve
Pulmonary
Bicuspid
Aortic valve
Pathways
To the heart via vena cava (superior and inferior) and pulmonary veins
Away from the heart (Aorta and pulmonary artery)
Blood vessel
Artery
Blood will pumped away from the heart to nurture the body (via aorta to smaller arteries)
Thick wall => Narrow Lumen, Elastic muscle (contains collage fibers) = maintain high blood pressure
Veins
Blood will be collected to be transferred to the heart via smallest to biggest veins
Wide lumen, thin muscle, thin wall, valves => contains a huge volume of blood prevent backflow
Capilaries
Blood will be transferred to the smallest tissues in the body and exchange materials through blood
Very small in diameter, lumen, thin wall (made of single cells), pores => minimize diffusion and transfer of materials
Circulation
