Types of Growth, Lateral meristem - Coggle Diagram
Types of Growth
-
Secondary Growth
Occurs mainly in eudicots & a small number of monocots (shrub) to increase the circumference or diameter of plant stem and root.
-
Necessity
Primary growth
- Allows maximum elongation of plants to absorb sunlight for photosynthesis.
- Primary phloem can transport products of photosynthesis from leaves to other parts of plants.
- Primary xylem can transport water and mineral salts from soil via roots to leaves.
- Primary xylem provides support to herbaceous or young plants.
Secondary growth
- Provide stability to plants by increasing stem & root diameters to suit height of plants.
- Provide mechanical support
- Provide more xylem & phloem tissues.
- Produce xylem & phloem continuously to replace old & damage xylem & phloem tissues.
- Produce stronger & thicker bark to provide protection to plants from excessive water lo9ss, physical injuries & pathogen infections.
- Able to live longer by increasing chances of seed production & reproduction.
