Research on writing instructions for ells
students w literacy skills in their home language can transfer these skills to english writing.
age and pror knowledge affect ELLs writing ability in english
expression in written language is dependent on ELLs level of oral proficiency.
frameworks for 2nd language writing & translingual practices - translingual practice highlights the way bilingual students draw on their linguistic resources as they produce wirtten text in a new language.
Writing w/ Technology:
online vs paper writing. online is more linear. paper is more concrete. what do my students prefer? (computer bc its easier to edit and fix errors)
automatically documents like google doc, coggle, prezi, slides are a great tool for teachers, & students
common tools used by students : tweet, instant messaging, wiki, text, etc.
using multimedia or images/videos/gifs/animations help demonstrate learning concepts for students.
students using abbreviations in language through media is ok, but its important to expand academic register.
Relationship between reading & writing:
readings can be used as a model for writing feature for students to imitate.
on the contrary, readings with errors are a good way to also include writing and error corrections.
when student starts reading books, they naturally begin to learn story elements, which can be transferable to their writing.
Assessing Writing:
standardized and high stakes exams do not accurately assess ELLs writing.
Designated ELL teacher isnt allowed to test their own students.. but how are the student set up for success without a teacher that has assessed them throughout the year and know their capabilities? built rapport with? (i dont agree w this)
Assessments even need to be modeled. how to assess a peer. how to self reflect and assess.
formative assessment that are assessed throughout the year give a batter assessment to gauge students progress and help plan for appropriate instruction.
promoting writing development for ELLs in the classroom: - modeled writing, guided writing, scaffolds, process writing, journals, independent writing, shared writing, writers workshop
