Mastoiditis - Coggle Diagram
Mastoiditis
Pathophysiology
The mastoid air cells have a rich supply of blood
It is a result of chronic otitis media
Where there is a damage of tympanic membrane
The infection then drains into the mastoid cavity where infecting organisms multiply
Resulting in an increase of discharge
Excessive drainage from the mastoid cavity transverses through the middle ear
The inflammatory process in the mastoid air cells results in oedema and more exudate
Thus increasing the pressure in the bony cavity
Clinical manifestation
Swelling and tenderness over mastoid process
Pushed out of the pinna
Pain in the ear
Prudent ear discharge
Brain abscess
Facial paralysis
Nursing intervention
Parental antibiotics and analgesia to combat infection and relieve pain
Surgery e.g mastoidectomy and possible tympanoplasty
Causes
Acute otitis media
cholesteatoma
