Observation
- Gives additional perspective and better understanding of the system procedures
Hawthorne Effect Study, productivity increase whenever workers knew they were being observed

Sampling
- Systematic Sample,
e.g. select every tenth customer for review
- Stratified Sample,
e.g. select five customers from each of four postal codes
- Random Sample,
e.g. any 20 customers
Objective, ensure it represents the overall population accurately
Research
- Internet, IT magazines, books, news, site visits
Document Review
- review old and current forms and documentation
Fact-Finding Overview
First, identify information that is needed
then develop fact-finding plan
Who, What, Where, When, How and Why?
- Difference between asking what is being done and what could or should be done
- Who, who performs this and that
- What, what is being done?
- Where, where are the operations performed
- When, when did you start the procedure?
- How, how is a procedure performed?
