Reproductive Coercion
Definition: behaviors that promote pregnancy in a female partner who does not wish to be pregnant
Disproportionately experienced by Black women, approximately 28% to 37% of these women experience it
Three domains: pregnancy coercion, birth control sabotage, and controlling pregnancy outcomes
Tends to stem from a person wanting complete control of their partner. May also be associated with intimate violence
Childbearing Motivation
Definition: an individual's feelings or thoughts which may reflect a preference or plan
Legacy and Bonding
Definition: creating a personal legacy and bonding with one's partner/future child
Results from the want to share wisdom with one's future child and have someone to carry on one's last name
Escaping/Correcting the Past
Being there for their future child and being able to teach them what is wrong and right
Prevent their future child from taking the same path/ending up where they are
Childbearing Desires
Love and Intimacy
Men in the study expressed that they wanted to have a child in order to convey their feelings to their partner and grow with each other down the road
Be a Good Father
Men in the study expressed that being/becoming a father gave them a different outlook on life. It made them more optimistic and protective
Childbearing Intentions
Resistance to Medical Interventions
Some participants held views that abortion and contraception were wrong as they prevented life and were unnatural
Preparation
Some participants stated that they initially put off childbearing due to the need for them to prepare themselves to become a father. They did not want to make the same mistakes their fathers did.
