The Lie
Summary
But he had already come to them, en did not bring good news. The father told the family that everyone was against Eli's admission just because he was his son, and knowing that the father was trying to get favoritism the son became angry and embarrassed. Together they made peace and the father said they would never go back there.
The mother later managed to find her son, and politely asked him how he was. Eli told her that he was very happy and that from the moment everything was over he felt like smiling. While the mother was consoling her son, he asked her where his father was and she said that he would go and look for him
The principal abandoned them, the mother decided to go after her son, and the father wanted to press the higher-ups for his son's admission. Both apologized to Tom and his son who had just arrived and left. The father was firm and determined, his goal came first, even the search for his son. Although his wife told him to leave it alone, he totally ignored her.
Next they saw school principal Donald Warren, who after a few minutes sat down with them. They started talking and the principal's tone seemed sad and distressed but the parents didn't know why. In the meantime Eli had disappeared and Silvia asked the principal if he thought his son was as good at school as his father. This was the moment when they found out that Eli had not been admitted to the school, discovering that he was the one who made the letter sent by the principal disappear, which they didn't even know existed.
When they finally arrived at the Holly house, Eli was getting more and more scared thinking about what was going to happen. They entered the dining room and immediately took their seats. The father ordered a drink and told his son not to get the idea that he would get favoritism because it would embarrass him. All the students were dressed in blazers and Eli's parents were really excited.
The two parents were talking about the way kids were admitted to the school, which was that they would have to have an interview with the principal and he would decide if a kid was a good fit for the school. Afterwards, the mother asked her son if the admission test was difficult and he said yes. This cheered up the mother who continued to praise the school in the meantime.
But Eli was aware of this. He was slumping because he hadn't been admitted to the school. Eli received this bad news in an email, and decided to tear it up so his parents wouldn't know. But the doctor and his wife had no doubt that he would be admitted.
The trip continued and Silvia in the meantime was reading the school catalog, noting that if a boy was good and smart even if he didn't have too much money he could get into Whitehill. Sylvia was pleased with this fact and gave all the credit to the Remenzel family. In the meantime Eli was slumping in his seat, and his father told him to stop.
They didn't know why he was slumping.
Suddenly, Dr. Remenzel saw his friend Tom, an old school friend, out the window. He also noticed his son standing next to him and immediately thought he was a good fit for Whitehill. Then together the two adults decided to meet for lunch at the Holly house where Whitehill's guests were served.
Silvia was talking about the fact that Eli, being a Remenzel could have various favoritism such as having a fireplace in his room or other things. Dr. Remenzel did not want to use his name to get Eli favoritism, and he did not want his wife to try to do that. Then talking about the possibility of Eli being in the room with Africans, Silvia asks her son if he didn't have any problems, and for her son there seemed to be none.
Doctor Remenzel asked his son if he was worried about something, and Eli said "No". The Remenzel's family was very important in the Whitehill story. Sylvia was reading the catalog of the Whitehill school, and was wondering how many Remenzels went to that school. His Husband told her that they could be about Thirty. She was very courious about The Remnzel's story in Whitehill school.
It was a early spring time, and a black Rolls Royce streaked up the Connecticut Turnpike to New York City. At the wheel there was Ben Barkley, a black chauffeur. Doctor Remenzel, his wife Sylvia and their son Eli were the passenger. Then Ben told Eli how he was, and he told him that he feel good. Ben thought that he was feeling good because he was going to the Whitehill school, a private preparatory school in North Martson.
