9.3 Conformity, Compliance and Obedience.

-Norms
Understood rules for accepted and expected behavior
Norms prescribe “proper” behavior.
-Normative social influence
Pressure resulting from a person’s desire to gain approval or
avoid disapproval
-Conformity (the result)
a type of social influence involving a change in belief or behavior
in order to fit in with a group. This change is in response to real
(involving the physical presence of others) or imagined (involving
the pressure of social norms / expectations) group pressure.
Normative social influence is the cause and Conformity is the effect.
-Informational social influence
Influence resulting from one’s willingness to accept others’
opinions about reality.
When we accept others’ opinions about reality, as when reading
online movie and restaurant reviews, we are responding to
informational social influence.
-Compliance
a. changing one's behavior due to the request or direction of
another person.
b. It is not conformity - here the request is explicitly made.
c. It is commonly called obedience.
