Mastoiditis - Coggle Diagram
Mastoiditis
Nursing
Careplan
Nursing diagnosis
Altered sleep pattern and discomfort due to pain
Risk of fluid volume deficit related to drainage from the ear
Infection related to increased temperature
Nursing intervention
Nurse the patient in a lateral position to facilitate drainage
Give Analgesics and antibiotics as prescribed
Assess the color and amount and odour of the discharge
Monitor vital signs especially temperature for infection
Use ear wick to absorb discharge from the ear and keep the ear dry
-
Expected outcomes
No drainage from the ear and the ear is dry
Temperature back to normal levels
No pain reported by the patient
Defination
Is the infection and inflammation of the mastoid hair cells as a result of recurrent chronic otitis media
Pathophysiology
In otitis media the infection drains into the mastoid cavity where infecting organisms thrive and multiply resulting in increased exudate. Excessive drainage from the mastoid cavity transverse through the middle ear and out of the perforated tympanic membrane through into the external auditory canal. The inflammatory process in the mastoid air cells result in oedema and more exudate thus increasing the pressure in the bony cavity
Signs and symptoms
- swelling and tenderness on the mastoid process
- protruding pinna
- pain in the ear
- purulent discharge from the ear
- high temperature
