Nursing diagnosis
Altered sleep pattern and discomfort due to pain
Infection related to increased temperature
Risk of fluid volume deficit from increased drainage from the ear
Loss of functions of the ear related to infection and inflammation manifested by hearing loss
Nursing intervention
Administer prescribed medication such as analgesics like paracetamol and antibiotics like amoxicillin for pain and infection
Keep the ear dry by wicking and teach the patient how to wick him or herself
Offer sputum mug for excessive throat secretions
Give high protein diet with vitamins to boost the immune system
Encourage fluid intake atleast 2 to 3 liters a day
Monitor fluid intake and output

Expected outcomes
Patient not complaining about pain
No discharge from the ear and the ear is dry and clean
Patient able to hear
Temperature back to normal levels

Pathophysiology
The eustachian tube is usually inflamed and blocked, preventing fluid drainage from the middle ear. This becomes a conducive environment for organisms to thrive.
