Handling props
these are objects that children pick up and use during dramatic play
it's best to have a mix of specific handling props and non specific ones. For example, a comb only can be used in a barber or beauty salon in a dramatic play. However, a piece of curved PVC can be used as a telephone, an iron and etc.
Having a variety of handling props facilitates creativity with both suggestion and accommodation.
Handling props also benefit certain skills in the early childhood classroom.
Motor skills- when children hold or grab an object, they are practicing fine motor movements. It will eventually stimulates cognitive development as well.
These props create opportunities for ideas like sharing and help children connect outside jobs and careers in classroom.
Costume props
These are the items in the prop box that can be worn.
These props don't have to be full costumes. It just need to be normal everyday clothes.
Specific props- expensive, simpler than the average Halloween outfit.
Non specific costumes- found almost anywhere. Example: blue button down shirt can be applied to several different dramatic play themes, as can most shoes and simple pants.
Benefits: they make children feel their play is important.
Validates their role in the classroom, It makes the game more real and leave the child feeling his play is important.
Costumes- used to introduce social and emotional skills among children.
Setting props
These props are the large objects that create a sense of place.
Makes the situation feel more real, like costume props but actively used by children.
It is best to keep them as versatile as possible.
Can be found in many places at variety of prices.
By setting up these props, they become the center of a communal space that the children will share. Hence, it will facilitate social interaction and create a sense of community.
