THE PERIOD TABLE
Mendeleev
-
- he would switch elements if he though they better fitted with te properties with another group
- realised some elements had not been discovered so he left some gaps for these to be put in place
-
-
Group 0
- very unreactive - they have a full outershell so they do not need to react to gain or lose electrons
-
Group 1
-
REACT RAPIDLY WTH OXYGEN more rapid as go down group eg. lithium oxide, soium oxide
-
-
-
Lithium reaction with WATER - fast reaction, effervescence, fizzing universal indicator tells us the water turns alkaline
-
Potassium reactng with WATER: extremely fast- hydrogen is produced
potassium + water -> potassium hydroxide + hydrogen
WHEN MOVING DOWN THE GROUP IT GETS MORE REACTVE BECUASE THE OUTER SHELL IS LESS ATTRACTE TO THE NUCLEUS AND IS EASIER TO LOSE BECUASE THERE IS A GREATER DISTANCE BETWEEN THE OUTER SHELL AND THE POSTIVE NUCLUES
group 7
-
-
-
-
LESS REACTIVE AS YOU GO DOWN THE GROUP - because the negative charge is attracted to the positive nucleus also because as you go down the group the distance from the nucleus is greater so cannot be attracted as easily shield by internal electrons so harder to attract an electron as you go down the group
