appointed, not elected, over 3000, swear an oath of allegiance to the crown and a judicial oath
funding
pay comes fro government, ranges from 257,000 to 110,000 for lowest rank, lawyer can earn up to 1 million
courts
crown court- explain legal issues to the jury, summarise things, decide on sentencing if guilty verdict
court of appeal- hear cases from lower courts, make rulings, set a precedent which will apply in lower courts
working practices
some judges in high courts deal with issues of national significance whereas lower courts deal with more local issues
