Information that made me think differently
ALL parents care about their children and want them to succeed.
I have biases that I was not aware of that I must work on.
To be successful, teachers must develop skills working with schools, families, and communities because all of these social settings impact students.
Students all have different home lives and communities that they live in and therefore require different types and levels of support to be successful.
Parental participation is required to make all decisions regarding the education of students with disabilities.
To be an effective communicator, one must assess their own communication skills.
Parents should be able to share their perspectives regarding student learning.
The majority of communication should be positive.
Parents and teachers are equal partners with complementary skills.
To approach diversity, all families should be treated with respect and family cultures should be incorporated into the classroom.
How information from this course will change me in my future career
I will lay the foundation for communication early by making an initial phone call and doing a home visit.
I will ask parents their preferred method of communication.
I will use parent bulletin boards, newsletters, and communication apps to share classroom happenings.
I will send home positive notes and situation notes as needed.
Conferences and meetings will include the whole family and the student.
I will provide opportunities for families and community members to volunteer in and visit the classroom.
I will send home activities, games, videos, and other information for families to do with their children.
I will communicate positives before negatives.
I will develop strong working relationships with my coworkers so that we can effectively utilize the 6 co-teaching methods.
I will engage my students with the community through field trips and reverse field trips.
I will be transparent with families because they want to know how their children are doing.
I will be self aware of my biases and communication skills in the classroom.
