Create an effective learning environment.
Students need to feel:
secure
comfortable
safe
The most important thing when enter to the class is BELIEVE
Have to have faith in yourself.
Consistency and Organization:
Opening Activity
Start each class with the same opening activity everyday
"do now"
SSR
Warm up problem
Journal prompt, etc.
Over-plan
Plan, plan, plan and plan more. Every minute is precious.
Procedures
Three to five explicit rules that are non negotiable
Line up to enter the room
Permission to leave seats
Talk in turn
Planner on desk, etc.
You will need to practice the procedures with the students until they become automatic.
Consistency is Key
Once the procedures are shared with students, you must adhere to them
Having a consistent routine eliminates opportunities for student mistakes.
Expectation that become the norm
Don't rush
Make sure you take the time at the beginning of the school year to really stablish your routines and procedures.
Seating Chart
You choose where the students sit
Have chart ready on 1st day
Arrangement needs to give every student easy access to teaching focal point
Change seating often.
Helpful Hints:
*Be present in the classroom
*Wait for quiet to talk – do not talk over the students.
*Don’t ask questions with undesired answers or ultimatums
*Provide structures
*Do not negotiate
*Provide choice – but all choices should be your choices
*Check planner during quiet, seatwork time.
*Anticipate and remove

*Say something positive to your class every day

Power in numbers – conspire with your adult teammates
