Amino Acids
Peptides are polymers made up of amino acids. proteins consist of one or more polypeptides arranged as complex macromolecules
all amino acids have the same basic structure (different R groups for different amino acids) and there are twenty different amino acids that are commonly found in cells
Synthesis of peptides
-
they are formed when the hydroxyl part of the carboxyl group reacts with the amine group of another amino acid (page 59 of textbook for example)
a peptide bond is formed between the amino acids and water is formed, this is an example of a condensation reaction
-
to reverse this, a hydrolysis reaction must occur adding water back to the molecule
-
types of proteins
Globular
compact, water soluble and a sphere shape
-
used in chemical reactions, muscle contractions and other things
-
fibrous

present in hair, skin and nails
