Assess the success of global governance strategies of food security (12) (Afghanistan)
Introduction
Due to climate change there have been severe droughts and trouble with vegetation. Animals have been very thin and skinny and many unable to produce milk with some animals even dying
This has led to huge rates of food insecurity with people unable to feed their families and farm effecitvely
More than 18 million Afghans are unable to feed themselves on a daily basis (2020) and this number is projected to rise to 22.8 million by the end of 2021
Located in Central Asia
FAO (food and agricultural organisation)
FAO is supporting farmers and herders with seeds, fertiliser, cash and livelihood support to keep agricultural production going which allows an increase in food security
FAO has distributed certified wheat seed bags and wheat cultivation packages amongst farmers and without it the farmers would not be able to effectively cultivate the wheat, meaning it allows them to have a greater wheat yield
The packages cost USD $150 per package
This campaign has benefited over 1.3 million people in Afghanistan
NAC (Norwegian Afghanistan Commitee)
Started its first United Nations Food and Agriculture organisation (FAO) project in 2020
80-85% of the population rely on agriculture for their living and food
Assisting vulnerable farmers and herders including landless people and families led by women
They were also assisted with kitchen gardening support, certified wheat seeds, livestock protection support and small-scale agricultural infrastructure projects
Without this programme many people would not of been able to afford vaccines, drugs or fodder for their livestock
Livestock mortality rates have decreased
Healthier animals means that milk, meat and other by-products resulting in better nutrition and income
Through construction and rehabilitation of irrigation canals, FAO are working together with NAC to provide job opportunities to thousands of labourers
More than 70,000 households in areas such as Ghanzi and Panishir received help in 2021
Community leaders were asked to select income poor households who could benefit from a direct payment of cash - this can however be criticised as it would lead some families out and would be unfair and difficult to decide which families deserve it more than others
By spring 2021, the project successfully distributed 50kg of wheat seeds and 100kg of fertiliser to 3,000 farming households in Badakhshah and Ghanzi provinces
Supporting Agricultural productivity in rural Afghanistan (world bank and ministry of Agriculture, Irrigation and livestock) (Afghan government)
Agriculture is the largest source of local income in Nuqra village in Enjil district
It lies in Herat Provence in far Western Afghanistan
More than 90% of the villagers work as farmers
The villages main irrigation canal was recently paved by the ministry of agriculture, irrigation and livestock
Through the on farm water management project (OFWMP) the paving of a 1,200 metre canal has led to increased agricultural outputs for the village and positive changes in the economic condition of the village's farmers
OFWMP has implemented 35 projects in Herat since 2011 leading to in creased access to irrigation, crop outputs and economic opportunities to local farmers
