- on the 2nd march 1629 black rod (the kings messenger) arrived at the house of commons to dissolve parliament
- however the door was slammed shut in his face and the speaker of the house was physically forced to keep the session open
- mp sir john eliot then proceeded to shout out three resolutions, condemning the king and his government
- two days later charles dissolved parliament and would not recall it for 11 years
