Nursing diagnosis
Altered sleep pattern and discomfort due to pain
Loss of functions of the ear manifested by patient reporting inability of hearing and ringing in the ear
Nursing intervention
Give prescribed analgesics to reduce pain
Use appropriate sign language when communicating to the patient
Refer the patient to the audiologist for tests and proper hearing aids if necessary
Gentle music may calm the patient

Pathophysiology
Otitis externa develops when the external ear canal becomes susceptible to bacterial or fungal infection by various mechanisms. Sudden invasive changes in humidity from a rapid intake of water into the ear canal can predispose the external ear to bacterial infection

- pain in the ear
- feeling of fullness in the ear
- hearing loss
- itching
- redness, or tenderness
