Paper 1, Section 1

Part 3 (Selfishness, Greed, Ignorance and Sin)
Selfishness
-
-
“Let each of you look not only to his own interests, but also to the interests of others.”
his links to selfishness because it is saying to not just look at your own interests and look at others. So it means that you shouldn’t only care about yourself and care about others.
Greed
“A greedy man stirs up strife, but the one who trusts in the Lord will be enriched.”
This relates to greed because it means a greedy man makes trouble/anger but when someone trusts the lord they will be improved. This quote is saying that if someone is being greedy they will make trouble but if someone doesn’t be greedy they will be better.
-
“Keep your life free from love of money, and be content with what you have"
-
Ignorance
“Beloved, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God, for many false prophets have gone out into the world.”
This links because all truth comes from god and it is saying that if anyone doesn't believe in god they are innocent because all our knowledge is from god.
“Whoever trusts in his own mind is a fool, but he who walks in wisdom will be delivered.”
This is very similar to the point above because it again is saying that whoever trusts his own knowledge is a fool (ignorant) but whoever trusts god is not being ignorant.
“For in much wisdom is much vexation, and he who increases knowledge increases sorrow.”
-
Sin
“For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God,”
This links to sin because it is saying that whoever sins they are further away from being god and Christians believe that if they don’t do any sin they will be more like god.
“Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you."
This is very similar to my explanation above because it is also saying that if you submit yourself you will be more like god and you should resist the devil and he will be gone.
Adam and Eve eat the fruit because the devil said it would make then be like god but instead they sinned
This links to sin because like i said they listened to the devil and not god and sinned so they got punished

Part 6
(Belief, Uncertainaty and Unbelief)
Causation argument
'everything has a cause so that means the universe must have a cause. The first cause is God' -St Thomas Aquinas
Design argument
There must have been a designer to create the earth because it is very complex e.g. a watch, it is so complicated there must be a designer. Similar to the human thumb showed evidence of design which could only be created by God.
Religious experience
Miracles
Something happens when it is very unlikely to happen because of scientific laws. E.g. Someone was stuck in a car that was drowning and she cannot swim. She couldn’t get out and everyone was trying to get her out and then she got out through a window. When they were towing the car away all the windows and doors were shut.

Part 4
(Free will, Determinism and Predestination)
predestination
-
John Calvin argued that from the fall people are sinful and nobody can be good enough to earn their way into heaven
Free will
Adam and Eve (the fall)
Adam and Eve (the fall). They had free will to chose to eat the fruit and go against God if they didn’t have free will to eat the fruit it would not be right to punish them
Christian believe that God gave them free will and the power to make decisions of our own then having God predetermine what we will do.
Our success or failure is not determined by fate. If we want to be successful we have to work hard for it.
