- 300 East Berlin Construction workers started STRIKE

- soviet forces used military force - (20,000 troops & tank warfare) to suppress the rioting
Consequences
- 18,000 arrested - 2,000 sentenced
- 55 demonstrators confirmed dead w/ 10 DDR officials
- Head of Stasi lost position - failed to see uprising coming
- 1954 - 17th June a bank holiday - Day of Germany Unity
- Allowed ULBRICHT to consolidate position
- Govern. responded to demands to reduce work norms
