Power: An obsession for humans and gods alike, with characters using whatever means necessary to have power themselves. Throughout the story, there are three roles that come into play when power is used: the one who wields power, the one whom the person with power dominates, and the ones who suffer collateral damage.
Self/Self-Preservation: Circe is a perfect example of how hard it is to find one's true self. She hates the heartless violence spawned from others’ race for power, but she feels that she has no choice but to play a part. After Odysseus leaves her, she realizes that must find her true self as she realizes it just her now.
Fear: Circe is so sick of living in fear that she no longer cares what the other gods think about her. She is now afraid to lose Odysseus and live without him, even though she knows he will die one day and she will continue to live on.
Change: Change is seen in Circe’s own story as she transforms herself from an impotent nymph into a powerful goddess-witch and then.
