Glossary of Terms
Binary oppositions
words and concepts that are opposite to each other, where one is good and one is bad.
Class
A person's societal position based on their birth, wealth, occupation, level of education. Different classes have different degrees of power.
Context
A personal, situational, cultural and historical background of a text and its composer, which influences both its creation and our reading of it.
Discourse
the type of language used by particular groups who share common interests or occupations. Involves not only terms and concepts but ways of speaking.
Dominant
a character, person, group or ideology that is given most power in a text.
Gender
masculine and feminine traits which we learn as we grow up, and which society and culture traditionally expect from us on the basis of our sex.
Marginalised
a character, person or group that is given little power in a text.

Receptive Reader
a reader who agrees with the ideas, issues and values in the text.

Silenced.
a character, person or group that is given no voice or power in a text.
