Pathophysiology

Develops when pathogens invade through the tonsils causing inflammation
May also be caused by fumes, perfumes and cold
Acute tonsillitis- symptoms lst for 3 to 4 days not more than 2 week's
Recurrent tonsillitis- this is when you experience symptoms several times in a year, symptoms that come and go
Chronic tonsillitis- this is a long-term show of symptoms if more than 3 months and sometimes may need surgery whre tonsils are totally removed
Signs and symptoms
Red swollen tonsils
Dysphagia
Bad breath
Neck, pain
Sore throat
Headache

Difficulty in breathing
Nursing interventions
Assess child for signs of hypoxia
Place child in a side-lying position to prevent aspiration
Discouraged patient from coughing to decrease pain
Give plenty fluids to the patient to prevent dehydration
Suction the patient PRN
Administer antibiotics (amoxicillin) and IV corticosteroids as prescribed
Nursing diagnosis
Ineffective airway clearance from respiratory tract due to swelling and pain of the tonsils as evidenced by dysphagia and breathing through the mouth
Evaluation
Child shows Normal breathing rate and sound, no secretions pain and swelling decrease
Possible outcome
Child maintain a patent airway and normal breathing sound and breathing rate
Definition
Inflammation of tonsils in which are two oval shaped tissue at the back of the throat.

Acute pain due to swollen tonsils as manifested by verbal complaint of pain when swallowing and swollen tonsils
Nursing interventions
Assess patient's level of pain and rate it from 0-10
Observe any signs of pain, crying episode and irritability
Avoid spicy food
Administer analgesics such as Ibuphofen and panado
Evaluation
Pain subsided
No difficulty when swallowing
