- altered nutrition and risk for fluid volume deficit
- ineffective airway clearance due to the drooling secretions
- hyerthermia related to fever caused by infection

nursing interventions
- increase fluid intake to flush all the secretions
- encourages the patient to gaggle using warm warm water and salt to help with the sore throat and infection
- give antibiotics like penicillin for controlling infection and analgesics for pain
- monitor temperature as it is sign of infection
- offer a container for the patient to spit the excess secretions
expected outcomes
- no sore throat
- temperature back to normal
- patient able to drink and eat effectively

pathophysiology
an abscess develops above the tonsil in the tissue space between the tonsil capsule and the surrounding tissues, including the soft palate.

signs and symptoms
- difficult in swallowing
- thickening of the voice
- drooling of secretions
- severe local pain and rigors
- fever
risk factors
- Age: teenagers/young adults are more likely to develop a peritonsillar abscess
- Oral sex
- Smoking
