fostering interdisciplinary collaboration in curriculum development
interest
very interested in how leaders deal with team dynamics and collaboration.
leadership and curriculum development were two of my favourite modules
I also think there is a global interest in this topic as many international baccalaereate schools experience the same issues
durability
i`m changing jobs in August - this topic was suggested to me by the current headteacher, who is leaving.
There may be issues with this topic being relevant (or a desired area of interest by the new headteacher) once I get to the school.
Adaquacy
I think there are sufficient theoretical and conceptual starting points for a literature review
I think that there will be a range of suitable research methods that could support the research phase and can be completed ethically
I think I will be able to make a range of suitable recommendations for change in the conclusion
Breadth
The teams to be studied are both interdisciplinary and intradisciplinary in nature - which gives an interesting scope.
I think I would look at the role of the leader in fostering collaboration, the type of collaborative culture and team dynamics(?) or trust(?) - this will be hard to determine until I actually start working at the school
access
as mentioned before, I am not currently working for this school so access at this point is unknown. But I do have the support of the owner who has agreed to commission the thesis and so I believe I will be able to gain access to the people/information I need in order to carry out the thesis.
risks and security
The risks of "stepping on peoples toes" is reasonably low. Collaboration is a difficult thing to get right. Maybe if the problem with getting people to collaborate is related to a toxic workplace culture, this might increase the risk. But as I say in the interest topic - there is a global interest in this issue and so if something can be done to forster more collaborative cultures, then I think people will want to know.
micropolitics
Again - I am not currently at the workplace where the thesis research will take place. This will either be to my advantage or disadvantage. Either people will see me as someone unbiased (who hasnt yet taken sides or formed allegiances) or they will not trust me because they do not know me yet. .
resources
Lots of research on collaboration in schools e.g. Gruenert & Whitaker (2015) look at types of school culture and have an interesting framework that could be used. Fullan, M., & Hargreaves, A. (1991). What’s worth fighting for? Working together for your school. look at some of the key issues that prevent collaboration.
lots of research done in the role of the leader in team effectivness Zaccaro, S. J., Rittman, A. L., & Marks, M. A. (2001). Team leadership. The Leadership Quarterly, 12(4), 451–483.
