PATHOPHYSIOLOGY
Bacteria spread from the middle ear to the mastoid air cells, where the inflammation causes damage to the bony structures.
Streptococcus pneumoniae, Streptococcus pyogenes, Staphylococcus aureus, Haemophilus influenzae, and Moraxella catarrhalis are the most common organisms recovered in acute mastoiditis.
Some mastoiditis is caused by cholesteatoma, which is a sac of keratinizing squamous epithelium in the middle ear that usually results from repeated middle-ear infections.
Definition
An infection that affects the mastoid bone, located behind the ear.
Mastoiditis is usually caused by a middle ear infection. This infection can result in damage to the mastoid bone and the formation of pus-filled cysts.

SURGICAL MANAGEMENT
Mastoidectomy , the removal of an infected mastoid air cells.
Simple mastoidectomy , incision made behind the ear to remove infected air cells by approaching through the ear.
Radical mastoidectomy , removal of tympanic membrane.
Myringoctomy , is a tiny incision created in the eardrum to relieve pressure caused by excessive creation of fluid or pus.
