The Tolpuddle Martyrs
1) after the French Revolution (1789), many governments feared being overthrown and feared trade unions, although they were not illegal.
2) George Loveless and 6 other labourers asked for their wages to be increased after they had been cut several times by their employers
3) the employers refused as they did not want to pay more wages and they then set up a trade union called the Friendly Society of Agricultural Labourers. members had to be blindfolded and swore an oath of secrecy
4) the employers found out and arrested them. they were sentenced to 7 years transportation to Australia.

7) in Britain there was widespread outcry and 25,000 people protested their sentence and 250,000 signed a petition for their release
7) in 1836, the government granted them a pardon, although it took 2 years for them to return back to England
