Definition
Acute inflammation of the pharynx

Group A beta Haemolytic streptococci

Pathophysiology
bacteria invade the mucosal tissues of the pharynx directly
Extracellular factors such as proteases facilitate the tissue invasion and cause the inflammation
that elicits swelling, exudates, fever, and pain with swallowing
Clinical manifestation
Red and sore throat
Fever
Dry throat
Malaise and cough
Chronic pharyngitis is more common in people who smoke and drink alcohol and who has Chronic cough
Nursing intervention
Tell patient how to hold a handkerchief over their nose and mouth when coughing
Tell them how to discard the hygienically
Teach them about proper hand wash technique to avoid transmission of infection
Give prescribed antibiotics to treat
Avoid smoking and alcohol
Tell them more about complications they may get.
