Memory and storage - Coggle Diagram
Memory and storage
Primary and secondary storage
Primary Storage
Primary memory consists of:
Random Access Memory (RAM)
Read only memory (ROM)
Can only be read from
Non volatile
Registers
Cache
It holds data and instructions the CPU needs while computer is running - small capacity
CPU can quickly access data from primary storage as a pose to the slower access time of secondary storage
All volatile storage (loses data when turned off) EXCEPT ROM
Secondary storage
All non-volatile
Much larger capacity than primary storage
Slower than primary storage
Consists of:
SSD - solid state drives
Optical storage devices - CDs and DVDs
Magnetic storage devices - hard disk drives
And many others
