- joined B at very beginning in 1903
- loyal to Lenin from 1903-21
- disloyal when Lenin couldn't fight back & was kept a secret from party
- held S in high regard - 'That wonderful Georgian'
- trusted w/ admin tasks & supported his promotion to General Secretary
