Aims:
Aim to show that when you force in-group/outgroup formation conflict and prejudice will arise
Aim to show that if 2 groups were set a subordinate goal, prejudice would decrease
Sample:
22 boys stayed at Robber's Cave State Park, Oklahoma for 3 weeks

Procedure:
Stage 1
First 5-6 days
Two groups were kept separate
Completed activities that encouraged group formation
Verbal and non verbal communication was tracked
Stage 2
Next 4-6 days
Camp tournament, the two groups finally met
Every member has to contribute
both groups were subject to fake problems, they thought were caused by the other group
Stage 3
Final 6-7 days
Devoted to bring about conflict resolution
Superordinate goals, eg water tank, broken down school bus
Results:
Stage 1
Formed own set of group rules
Named their groups; Eagles and the Rattlers
'They/them' attitude formed
Stage 2
Hostility to opposing group
99% of friends were ingroup
Eagles burned the Rattlers team flag
In group support in competition, cheering etc
Stage 3
Fighting
Superordinate goals, co operated and reduced prejudice when carrying them out but later the same night they were hostile to each other again
63% in-group friends, more outgroup friends
Conclusions:
Prejudice will occur in a situation merely where two groups are created, supports Social Identity Theory
Supports the idea that competition may be a factor that causes prejudice
