Chapter 31 - Global and Environmental Issues
Globalisation
interaction between the people,. organisatrions and the government in different nations
advances in communcation technology, cloud storage and computing and use of IT has enabled exchange of skills and information between people and businesses across the globe
internet-based communcation has made it easy and inexpensive to communcate and collaborate across the globe
Pros
large, global organisations can have call centres located in different countries
having call centres in other countries means organisations can take advantage of lower taxes
Cons
Infrastructure in undeveloped countries
(such as electricity supplies and broadband connection)
may be patchy or inadequate
IT classrooms may only have a singular outlet
UK IT volunteers may have unexpected difficuklties due to these
Unequal Access to IT in the UK
*digital divide
between countries and within the UK*
95% of homes and offices could get broadband speeds of 24Mbps or faster
some rural and urban premises cannot get sufficient broadband speeds necessary for their needs
Implications on
individuals, organisations and wider society
inexperienced users
exposed to fraud, theft, bullying and lies perpretrated on social media
small, rural businesses
that have no access to fast broadband are unable to use technology such as cloud computing as upload/download speeds is too slow
nations
may not have the infrastructure to support technology, citizens may be less well-educated
Environmental Issues
Negatives
rare, raw earth materials need to be sourced
(copper, gold, lithium & platinum)
mines can expose workers to toxic substances & dangerous working conditions
mining may posion soil and groundwater supplies
rainforests are being destroyed
materials for packaging
electricity and gas for factories
diesel and petrol for transport
water wastage
Positive
computers help us to be more productive and less wasteful
working from home
employees no longer need to commute to work, avoiding contributing to atmospheric pollution
Disposal of Devices
The Waste Electrical and Electronics Equipment regulations 2018
(WEEE)
requires producers of electrical and electronic equipment in EU to operate a recycling program
manufacturers are required to accept electrical and electronic equipment and arrange appropriate disposal and recycling
we all must take responsibility for the environment through conscientious use, recycling and minimising use of electricity and consumables
