Initiation-Response-Feedback (IRF) - Coggle Diagram
Initiation-Response-Feedback (IRF)
Intro
Speaking: Important role to communicate with other people in daily
life - Thornburry (2005, p.1
Interaction: It is an activity that usually conducts in classroom and it has an
important role to build communication between teacher and students
Communication: Central to all classroom activity - Walsh (2011, p.23)
INTERACTION
Interaction is at the heart of
communicative competence - Brown (2001, p.167)
occurs every day in classroom activities between teacher and students
SPEAKING
Specific features of verbal interaction as stated by Walsh (2011, p.33)
Link Title
(1) In direct-error correction, teacher interacts with students to correct errors which made by them during conversation occured.
In content feedback, teacher provides personal reactions to comments conversation that occurs naturally
In checking for confirmation, teacher who seeks clarification and checks for confirmation has an opportunity to maximize learning potential
conclusion
The interaction during teaching learning was full of IRF pattern sequences
By giving the questions, soliciting information and identifying the students who have next turn to answer
In line with types of IRF, in the classroom activities the students' response is dominantly occured
if the material in classroom lesson is easy the student participation will occurred frequently
It depends on what material of classroom lesson and how teacher's way provoking student to be active
To achieve better result in conducting classroom interaction in speaking class:
Student should be more actively involved in the classroom
student should create their own opportunities and find strategies to practice the language
student should increase their motivation in studying speaking English through learning and practice language
it will be better to conduct the study not only about classroom IRF pattern but the other patterns as well
conduct classroom interaction such as scaffolding and private speech pattern
future researchers expected to observe interaction pattern among students.
Discussion
Aim
Describe the reflection of IRF pattern when teacher-students interaction
Analyze the dominant exchange of IRF
Data were analyzed qualitatively
Transcribing
Transcribing is the process of convert audiotape recordings in to the data. - Cresswell (2008, p.239)
Coding
The process of segmenting and labeling text to form descriptions
and broad themes in the dataand broad themes in the data
Analyzing
In this step, the writer analyzed the encoded transcription of the result of recorded classroom interaction into IRF pattern
IRF pattern
Every interaction initiated by the teacher question
Then followed by student response by giving opinion
Next, teacher give feedback verbally and non-verbally toward the students opinion
Result of the study
The response of the students is the dominant pattern in the classroom interaction in speaking class rather than initiation and feedback
Second place is teacher initiation
Due to students' passiveness
Lowest score is teacher feedback
Due to the lack of response from students
In contrast, Hong (2009) found that teacher initiation from the
whole of classroom activities was dominant occurred
According to Nakula as cited in Saikko (2007, p.24) assumed that nothing the exact structure of the IRF pattern that would lead to teacher or students dominance
IRF pattern gives same chance for both teacher and
students to interact actively as well as dominantly in classroom
