The Cobbs School
William advanced braidwood $600 on the fees for his son
Braidwood got in trouble in Baltimore so the school could not be established there
Braidwood left to New York, in search for deaf children to relocate to Richmond.
Braidwood was in jail for Harrison’s debt.

Braidwood wanted to convince Bolling to let him start a school for the deaf in cobbs
March 1815, Braidwood began his school at Cobbs with an enrollment of five students:

in 1816, braidwood left the school.
The school’s collapse may also have been related to Bolling’s lack of financial resources
there was a second attempt at a school but Braidwood would leave again
only option for families with deaf offspring was to send their children to Europe.
The Northern Endeavor: The American School for the Deaf
Cogswell Solicited funds from his social and political network,
Took a census to identify potential students
Gallaudet convinced Laurent Clerc, to teach in the U.S.
Cogswell and his supporters convinced the Connecticut state legislature to give the school $5,000
Gallaudet Cogswell, and Clerc, established a school which is still running today
Radically Different Fates of Two Schools
The North and the South diverged significantly in social, political, and economic matters.
Religious revivals swept both North and South by the early nineteenth century,
God could understand many languages and that includes signs
The Connecticut school was in a more populated area where students had easier transportation access.
The Cobbs School was distant, isolated, and rural
north had more resources for money

The American School model spread throughout the nation and remained the standard until AGB

Two schools emerged in the United States between 1815 and 1817.
Southern school was financed by a Southern slaveholder named William Bolling.
Northern School was financed by Northern eye doctor, Mason Fitch Cogswell
Northerners believed state cooperation was a necessity;
Southerners believed in individual undertakings.
