Issue 1- Free and full consent to marriage
UDHR Article 16- marriage shall be entered into with the free and full consent of the spouse
What is a forced marriage?
'a marriage in which one or both spouses do not consent to marriage and violence, threats or any other form of coercion is involved'
not same as arranged marriage, as in arranged marriage both parties can refuse
Who is affected by forced marriage?
affects wide range of communities e.g. Irish Traveller, Turkish, Roma, Afghan, South Asian, Kurdish, Iranian, Arab and African communites
no religions that support forced marriages
recognised as form of violence against women and girls
when occurs breaches number of human rights
Forced Marriage Unit
FMU is a joint Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) and Home Office Unit which leads on the government's forced marriage policy, outreach and casework
set up in UK in 2005
gives advice & support to victims of forced marriage
forced marriage been illegal in UK since 2014
launched 'right to choose' campaign to create awareness of the issue
2015- 1220 cases of forced marriage reported to the unit- 80% female & 27% were under 18
44% in relation to Pakistan
2018 saw first successful conviction in England for forced marriage
mother sentenced to 4 & 1/2 years imprisonment with 3 & 1/2 years for the offence of forced marriage and 1 year for the perjury when she lied in High Court case
mother fooled daughter into going to Paskistan to marry a man 16 years her senior
Issue 2- The Right to Bear Arms
2nd Amendment states- "A well regulated militia, being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms, shall not be infringed"
What does 'a well-regulated militia' mean?
militias were groups of men who worked together to protect their communities, towns or states
2nd Amendment was a compromise that allowed states to keep their militias and individuals to keep their guns
Does the 2nd Amendment protect the right of individuals to bear arms?
some say that phrase 'well regulated militia' shows the amendment is referring only to organised groups e.g. National Guard
National Guard is a reserve military force that replaced state militias after the Civil War
others argue that all citizens, not just militias, have a 2nd Amendment right to keep weapons for protection
US Supreme Court has ruled that the 2nd Amendment does apply to individuals
2017 Las Vegas shooting
shooting committed by Stephen Paddock was a 64 year old
used hammer to break 2 windows in both his suites & began shooting through them at 10:05 pm
fired over 1,000 rifle rounds into festival audience
