Eccentric (ECC) Exercise for Health: Less is more? - Luis Penailillo
Eccentric exercise characteristics
Lesser metabolic cost
Muscle damage (doms)
Repeated bout exercises > reduced muscle damage after ECC
Greater force production (catapult effect of muscle lengthening)
Unique neural strategy
ECC shown more activity in th SMA area in brain in comparison with CON.
COPD: Cronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease; caused by airflow limitaiton ofter associated with parenchymal destruction, development of emphysema and chronic bronchitis.
Dyspnea and exercise intolerance
3rd cause of death worldwide
Muscle dysfunction
Inflammation and oxidative stress
Survival > muscle mass & strength > ECC exercise
Chronic endurance exercise cause nitrosive stree in COPD patients
METHODS 1 - ECC cycling for COPD patients
12 weeks training with eccentric anc concentric cycling groups (pre-post testing)
METHODS 2 - contralateral training during immobilisaiton
4 weeks of immobilisation of one arm for three groups; control, CONC/ECC group and ECC exercise group
Cross Education Effect/Mechanism in brain improves strength of immobilized arm
RESULTS
ECC induces 70-50% lesser cardio-metabolic demand but can produce 3-fold greater workload.
ECC increased muscle mass and induced greater fucntional performance improvements.
CONC decreased fat mass and markers of cardio metabolic health and improved antioxidant capacity
ECC seems to have an unique neural strategy.
Contralateral ECC seems to induce greater cross-transference of NM function to the untrained arm.
