Deconstruction of investigation
Extraneous variables
Participant variables (individual characteristics)
What time of the day was the experiment conducted
Morning - the brain is the sharpest and most optimal for performing in the hours immediately following waking up
Afternoon - after lunch participants would've eaten food and this would increase nutrients and energy in their body
End of day - the body and mind may be fatigued, ability to absorb visual information and translate the visual data into though is slowed down
Mood
positive mood are more likely to remember information compared to negative mood that are less likely to remember
Intelligence
higher memory recall is generally seen with people with high IQ whereas low IQ would generally score lower, it was observed that higher IQ people used more effective techniques
Situational variables
Background noise
background noise increases general activation of attention which then decreases the concentration of the specific task for the experiment
Temperature
Lighting
Independent variable
Cues - visualisation, positive imagery, self-reference
how to know if the participants actually felt positive emotions from the description
Sample size
the sample size is too small so isn't accurate for the general population
the number of participants for each group were inconsistent
Dependent variable
Number of words recalled
Research design type
Experimental design type
Advantages
allows manipulation of each group
Disadvantages
Can be impractical to come to a complete conclusion
