once a child has established their gender identity around the age of 2-3 they will begin to search the environment for information that encourages development of gender schema. this contrasts with kohl bergs view that this process begins after constancy
schema direct behaviour and self understanding- for young children, schema likely to be formed around stereotypes, these provide a framework that directs experience as well as understanding of slf- "I am boy so much play with truck" by 6 child has fixed and stereotypical view of self
in-groups and outgroups-better understanding of the schemas appropriate to their own gender (the in-group). rather than opposite gender (outgroup). when children are older they develop elaborate schemas for both genders, as apposed to just their own

children under the age of six more likely to rememeber photographs of gender consistent behaviour than gender inconsistent when tested a week later. tended to change the gender of gender inconsistent when asked to recall.
