Deconstruction of D & D
Data collection
Strengths
- Although participants could view others results, it was somewhat anonymous (an ID number was provided but most participants do not know each others ID)
Weakness
- the data was subjective as it was recorded by the participants themselves
- Participants could view other participants results as results were recorded on a shared google sheet, viewed by all
- when collecting data on musical confidence, not all participants had the same meaning attached to each number on the scale. For instance, what someone may have recorded as an 8 could mean a 5 to aonther participant.
Errors
- As the data was recorded by the participants themselves, the data is subjective and may have been altered, which can lead to inaccurate results
Improvements
- When participants have completed listing as many words as they recall, they should give their notes to the conductor of the experiment, given they are not a participant as well, and the conductor would check and record the results
- before participants rate themselves on their music confidence, it should be specified what all numbers represent. Which can be expressed through an in detail explanation given by the conductor/supervisor. This will allow all participants to have the same perceptipn for each number and not cause inaccuracy in the data (for musical confidence scale)
Method
Errors
- participants could look at the answers of the person next to them and copy down their answers
Strengths
- the same method was given for each group. no one had been given seperate instructions.
- participants were unaware of what imagery they will be hearing if any. although they did know they were seperated into groups, this did not affect them in knowing what they will hear
Weakness
- most participants were sitting with a group of people, and close enough to at least 1 person, to see their screen
- the audio of each group had different time lengths
- not all participants were in the same environment. some did the experiment in class where as some did it at home. the participants who did it at home could possibly be exposed to more or less distractions.
Improvements
- Place participants of the same group in different locations. Eg group 1 participants go into classroom 1, group 2 participants go into classroom 2, and etc.
- This improvement can also allow only one timer to be used for all the participants as they will all have the same time length for the audio and will finish at the same time
Material
Strengths
- Both the material used for the timer and listing of recalled words could be used on the same material (laptop)
Weakness
- When the timer goes off it can be heard across the classroom due to the noise
Improvements
- both the timer and listing of words should be used on the laptop, with a split screen so they can both see the listing and the timer.
- every participant should use some sort of earphone/audio when listing so that when the timer goes off, only they can hear it and therefore, not interrupting or distracting us
Errors
- the noise of the timer can distract others, from either recalling the words or listening to the audio
Sample Size
Strengths
- All participants were taking Year 11 psychology, taught by Mr Taylor
Weakness
- restricted to only GIHS Year 11/10s from Mr Taylors class psychology D & E classes
- the participants were not all the same age, gender nor in the same year level. In addition, it was not known who was born in 2006 or 2005, and who is in Year 10 and Year 11. The only thing common between the participants was that they were taking psychology as a subject.
- some students had pre-existing musical knowledge or were confident in their musical capabilties
Improvements
- Have the sample size be consisted of numerous students (both identifying females and males) from Year levels 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, & 12
Errors
- Only the GIHS Year 11/10s from Mr Taylors psychology D & E classes participated, not allowing a more broader sample such as different year levels, different subjects, or different schools.
