Homelessness
:silhouettes:
-Lack of affordable housing and not enough spaces in shelters
- Free (maintained) housing facilities around the city; 500 units in each, housing singles and large families
- New policies that will not raise rent on renters in the city; this will be one prevention of homelessness in the city
- Setting up public showering hubs around the city in multiple locations (so property value won't go down if all the showering hubs are in close vicinity of each other. )
- Adding more public seating in parks/public spaces that are sleeping and sitting friendly, allowing free access to all including the homeless in the community
*"The Affordable City" Shane Phillips. This article fits into the map because Phillips proposes different policies and requirements for an affordable city, one being moderate restrictions and strong restrictions places on increasing the rent for new housing and old housing. Shane states that rent should be restricted to be raised more than the CPI (consumer price index), plus 5% in a 12-month period
.
-Not seeing homeless people as people
- Acknowledge that homeless people are people and nothing less
- Setting up volunteer hours in local community centers that work with homeless people and people that live in the community: feeding programs, clothing donations, etc.
-Will help connect people to see that homeless people are people

: This article fits into my map because it talks about the abuse that homeless people endure, that is not just by municipal laws. It is verbal, physical, and in a 2010 the U.S. Department of Justice did a study that showed 49% of homeless people fell victim to violence from people in their community. In this article, scholars suggest that better housing strategies to get homeless people off the street will help combat the violence against them.
- Violence and negative feelings towards homeless people
- Not having a job or much work experience
- Creating classes/programs at community centers that teach trades and basic skills for employment opportunities
- Jobs in the community available to the homeless people through the trade/class program, creating more employment opportunities for homeless people in the city overall
- Many employers do not want to hire homeless people due to stigma; "homeless people are lazy"; many homeless people don't have an address
http://www.nationalhomeless.org/publications/facts/Employment.pdf
: This article fits into the map because they state that the 13% of homeless people who are employed cannot escape homelessness, those without a job it is impossible to escape homelessness, and those who do not have many skills or who are experienced it is hard to find opportunities for jobs that pay “living wage”.
-Lack of food and aqeduate healthy meals
-Food/meal vouchers that allow access to free food at all grocery stores and mini mart/convenient stores
- More grocery stores will be built, especially in the poorer areas where there is a large population of homeless people
- Lack of grocery stores
https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4121392/
: This article fits into my map because it talks about how that many homeless people eat “fewer meals per day”, lack access to food significantly often than others, have inadequate diets and poor nutrition.
- More public gardens around the city that are accessible to the public to harvest
