U.S. troop involvement increases in 1964 because of Gulf of Tonkin Resolution (U.S. ship was allegedly attacked)
U.S. troop numbers plateau in 1968 after the Tet Offensive (North Vietnamese launch large attack against U.S.) and it becomes clear we are not winning the war.
Although the communists failed to establish lasting control of any place, the Tet Offensive marked a turning point in the Vietnam War . Before the Tet Offensive, American leaders had claimed that the war was progressing smoothly. After Tet, however, the U.S. government had to admit publicly that the war was not going well.
1970's: pentagon papers show the public that they have been mislead by the U.S. government on it's intentions and involvement in Vietnam.
Vietnamization: The process of getting South Vietnam to take more control of the war, whole the U.S. would withdraw its own troops

Antiwar protests surged going into the 1970's. People were unhappy with things like the draft, the bombing in Cambodia, the Pentagon Papers, etc.
Domino Theory: "The U.S. government operated on the theory that if one country became communist, this could influence its neighbors to become communist. This was called the domino theory because it pictured a series of "falling" to communism one by one, knocking each other over as if they were a line of dominos."
Containment: "The idea of containment was to not challenge communism where it already existed but to prevent its spread."
Marshall Plan: The U.S. pledges financial support to Western European countries to make them stay capitalist, and not communist.
Truman Doctrine: pledged that the U.S. would fight the spread of Communism worldwide (Turkey and Greece)
Soviets vs Americans:
Americans = non communism (Capitalism)

NATO (North Atlantic Treaty Organization): the military organization for the non communist countries of Western Europe.
Soviets = (Communists)

Warsaw Pact: the organization of communist nations in Eastern Europe. This is the communist version of NATO.

in the 1950's when there was a large focus on finding communist supporters in American society and government
