USA INFLUENCE
Political influence
The USA has a permanent and leading role in the UN Security Council along with Russia, China, France and the UK. The USA has the power. to impose and veto UNSC resolutions.
For example, in 2017 the USA used its VETO to stop a resolution which would have called for them to withdraw Donald Trumps recognition of Jerusalem as Israel's capital. This shows that the US is able to change decision making on a global scale.
-
However, the USA isn't the only country that has a veto in the UNSC which shows that there is a limitation to their influence. The US has at times found decision making within the UNSC frustrating and time consuming as Russia and China are also permanent members and often use their veto to block US proposals.
For example, the USA has not been able to get a resolution passed that would respond to the use of chemical weapons in Syria because it has been vetoed by Russia.
Military influence
-
The USA is a dominant member of the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation (NATO) which is the worlds most powerful military alliance. The USA contributes far more troops and finances than any other country, the US pays 3.5% of their GDP to NATO. NATO will defend its members from aggression and an attack on one member is an attack on all.
For example, NATO has sent troops and resources to defend Ukraine from Russia.
However, Americas military influence has been weak in Afghanistan over the past years.
- For example, in 2021 President Biden marked the end of 20 years in Afghanistan with a withdrawal. Once the withdrawal was announced hundreds of civilians forced their way into Kabuls airport. Many packed the runways alongside moving military aircrafts, the Taliban got into the airport and killed a total of 7 people. USA lost the war against Taliban
USA also has a huge amount of military assets.
-450 intercontinental missiles
-178 bombers
71 nuclear powered submarines
-9,500 main tanks
-11 aircraft carriers
-1.4 million personnel
Europe influence
During Obamas presidency, relations with international countries were held in high regard as he was present in many international treaties and organisations within Europe.
-
For example, Obama entered the Paris Agreement and said "the Paris climate deal could prove a turning point in the effort to avoid dangerous global warming". Obama was able to withstand good relationships with Europe and have influence in many treaties.
However, during Trumps presidency he weakened relations with Europe, as he threatened to pull out of many international promoting global order.
For example, Donald Trump pulled out of the Paris Agreement on climate change an initiated a process to withdraw from the World Health Organisation in the midst of a global pandemic. This shows lack of commitment.
Economic influence
-
The USA is the worlds biggest economic power, its economy produces 1/4 of the worlds wealth - $25 Billion in 2021.
The USA is also a member of significant groups such as the G20. Which is a group of the twenty most developed countries in the world that meet to discuss global policy on trade, health, and climate. The G20 represents 80% of the worlds GDP, 75% of global trade, and 60% of the worlds population.
However, the USA doesn't have as much economic influence on China.
- For example, in 2016 Beijing overtook New York as the "Billionaire capital of the world". In response Donald Trump in his presidential campaign he promised to destroy any nation "that takes advantage of the US", Trump then proceeded to put a $360 billion trade tariffs on Chinese goods. China then retaliated by putting trade tariffs on $110 billion on US goods.
- China shouldn't be undermined, as they have been able to withstand the tariffs.
