Volcanoes
Volcano types
a composite volcano, is a conical volcano built up by many layers (strata) of hardened lava and tephra.
-
shield volcano- a broad domed volcano with gently sloping sides, characteristic of the eruption of fluid, basaltic lava.
plate tectonics, theory dealing with the dynamics of Earth's outer shell
divergent plate boundary- A tectonic boundary where two plates are moving away from each other and new crust is forming from magma that rises to the Earth's surface between the two plate boundaries
convergent plate boundary- tectonic boundary where two plates are moving toward each other. If the two plates are of equal density, they usually push up against each other

-
continental drift theory- was a revolutionary theory explaining that continents shift position on Earth's surface.
subduction- the sideways and downward movement of the edge of a plate of the earth's crust into the mantle beneath another plate.
-
Hot spot -is an area of the Earth's mantle from which hot plumes rise upward, forming volcanoes on the overlying crust.
magma chamber- is the underground space usually deep below the earth's surface occupied by magma that may ascend from it to or toward the surface
pyroclastic flow- a dense, destructive mass of very hot ash, lava fragments, and gases ejected explosively from a volcano and typically flowing downslope at great speed.
An effusive eruption is a type of volcanic eruption in which lava steadily flows out of a volcano onto the ground.
pahoehoe lava- a lava flow with a smooth, ropy surface.
