Deforestation is the loss of forests and jungles due to the impact of human activities or natural causes. Forests are important repositories of biodiversity and their sustainable management is essential not only to conserve them, but also to sustain the functioning of ecosystems; they represent a source of food, medicines and fuel for more than one billion people, among whom are the poorest, and they are a central weapon of the entire population to combat climate change and protect soils and water.
Deforestation is caused because the production chain needed to meet human needs is increasingly accelerated, as well as consumption habits.
Predictions
At this rate, if deforestation is not controlled, some of the consequences will be that:
- The price of food and resources obtained from vegetation will increase.
- The temperature of the planet will increase considerably.
- Many plant species will disappear.
- Air pollution will be one of the main consequences because the trees will no longer be that natural "filter".
- We won’t be able to avoid climatic changes on the planet.
Solutions
- Put pressure on big companies to adopt sustainable supply chains so they can be held accountable for the damage they cause.
- Eliminate subsidies for forms of agriculture that damage forests.
- Offer incentives to people who help reforest and take care of the vegetation (in addition to monitoring their application).
- Implement reforestation campaigns and conservation projects.
