Fertilisation and development
after ovulation, the egg is caught in the funnel of the oviduct, which is lined with cilia which beat rhythmically. it wafts the egg into the entrance of the oviduct.

sexual intercourse is acted out to bring the sperm as close as possible to the egg. the male's penis -- erected by being sexually excited -- is placed inside the vagina of the female
sperm is pushed out of the penis and into the vagina. this happens when muscles in the walls of the tube containing the sperm contract rhythmically.
the sperm is squeezed out of the man's urethra and into the woman's vagina. this is called ejaculation. the fluid containing the sperm is called semen
when sperm enters the egg, only the head of the sperm goes in. the nucleus of the sperm fuses with the nucleus of the egg. this is called fertilisation
Implantation
sperm nucleus and egg nucleus fuse together to form a zygote. the zygote continues to move slowly down the oviduct.
it divides by mitosis and after several hours forms a ball of calls. this is called embryo. it obtains food from the yolk of the egg
Placenta and amnion
the cells in the embryo continues to divide in the soft wall of the uterus. a placenta also grows which connects it to the wall of the uterus
in the placenta, capillaries are filled with the fetus' blood. the wall of the uterus are large spaces filled with the mother's blood. the fetus' and mother's blood does not mix and are separated by the wall of the placenta

The menstrual cycle
one egg is usually released into the oviduct every month. before the egg cell is released, the lining of the uterus becomes thick and spongy to prepare itself for a fertilised egg cell
