4 concept from book : 'MATERIALS IMAGINATION IN ARCHITECTURE'
Constructional Thinking
The construction is to incorporate water as part of the theme with prefabricated components combined. Materials like terracotta and cork is included.
The decorative columns are more than requirement, articulating the design intention to bring out the sense of water reacting with bamboo. They are strong as they are corrugated on the surface, hollow internally and segregated into 4 parts. The exhibition rooms are voids carved out of the grid of columns, with slabs suspended from the roof and braced only by the columns
Columns are placed within water feature and outwards as facades while beams are maximally invisible.
Crystal Utopias
Reflection and refraction of natural lights from external space into the internal room can be done with the features like the water by theme
The water feature provides reflection, harmonising with the reflective walls to extend visuals and cooling effect visually or physically by vapour.
The numerous columns sift the natural lighting before it reaches indoor. The walls surrounded by columns are transparent materials to allow visual contact between internal and external ambiances ambiguously while making it appear weightless and airy. The tiles indoor are made smooth and reflective, improving lighting effieciency.
Making Surfaces
The surfaces comply with the organic elements set in the theme and the contrasting geometrical forms built from grid lines drawn.
The surface of the exhibition space is made smooth and glazed in contrast with the organic, comparatively dull material that symbolizes bamboo forest, but harmonious with the geometric and industrial form of the exhibition space.
For the organic part to express the intention of bamboo forest metaphor, curved and rough surface are exposed to reinterpret the bamboo trunk. The joint dents of bamboo are represented by the gaps left between repeated components of each column while the fine vertical patterns of bamboo trunk is pictured with vertical dents.
The Matter of Climate Change
The premise is to exist in sunny, less rainy and cool weather with great variation throughout each year to provide a cool, less humid ambience for artworks expo.
Since there is less rain but high humidity, the water feature maintains the humidity level indoors for the users in building without damaging the treated materials.
The good amount of gaps between building materials allow the expansion and contraction of materials without being detrimental to the structure and beauty especially during March and April when climate change is relatively intense.
Building's design future/ solution
Form/Geometry
Built on irregular shape type of site that overlaid with grid steel columns
The display volumes' glass forms are cut out of this grid and so sit within the artificial 'forest.'
Materials
Glass
Reflective
Reflected natural light into building
Transparency
Glass allow users to view the outer environment
Smooth
Contrast with the pillars that have vertical dents
Clay
The external pillars provide diffuse shading, and each steel pillar is coated with clay, which absorbs water and creates an evaporation effect as well as air currents that produce a cool microclimate surrounding the structure.
Timber
Timber life span is not affected by the weather after treated.
It representative element of tropical climate which is relatively rare in this context.
Structural System
pre-fabricated
to improve the performance of the building during the Expo
Once it has reached the end of its projected lifespan, it should be easy to disassemble and recycle the materials and components.
For example: The columns are made corrugated on the outside, hollow inside, and divided into four sections.
Environmental
Low humidity
The surrounding environment will need to be cool since it is an art exhibition expo
outdoor
The idea is to be able to exist in sunny, less rainy, and cool weather with a lot of change throughout the year in order to give a cool, less humid environment for the exhibition of artworks.
Indoor
The clay pillars and cork cladding on the underside of the roof is intentionally to maintain the surrounding temperature
Sustainability
reduce the use of energy
To maintain the exhibition area's size, the majority of the equipment and energy-saving mechanisms are installed in the roof depth, where a dedicated section is totally covered in a curtain of PV panels and solar collectors, further reducing energy demand
