The anciient Romans set up a rupublic in which ancient Rome was ruled by a group of people instead of a king.
For many years, ancient Rome was governed as a republic. But 27 BCE, after a civil war, Octavian, the adopted son of Julius Caesar, emerged victorious. He ended the Roman Republic and became the first emperor of the Roman Empire.
Arts, Crafts and Sciences
The ancient Romans were great builders and architects. They were inspired by the Greek architect and were also creative in their designs and use of materials.
The Romans invented concrete which was easier to use than solid stone. With concrete, theey were able to build large and sturdy buildings.
The dome of the Pantheon, a huge building comstructed in ancient Rome as a temple to honour all Roman gods. Its construction was made possible by the use of concete.
The Romans also discovered how to use arches to create tall, strong walls and doorways.
The Arch of Constantine in Rome is held up by three arches, allowing it to reach a height of 21 meters.

The ancient Romans use letters from the Roman alphabet to represent different number values. We can still see the Roman in books and on clocks today.
