BEFORE WW2
1.Proto-Malays-close contact with the Malays for hundreds of years
2.Many Proto-Malays have been assimilated into the Malay communities -many have convert into Islam
3.ORANG ASLI AS SLAVE: As infidels(kafir) ,Orang Asli could be captured and enslaved. There were no social, religious or legal obstacles to discourage Malay wishing to enslave members of the jungle communities.
4.The Orang Asli played an important role in trade and governance in the region and alliances with the Orang Asli were much sought after by the Malay settlers.
5.CONTACT WITH CHINESE: The Chinese community in the Malay States had much less contact with the Orang Asli than did the Malays
(ii)DURING THE JAPANESE OCCUPATION OF MALAYA
1.Many individual and organisations took refuge in the hills and forests.
2.Friendly contacts made by many Chinese with the Orang Asli before the war became invaluable during the Occupation
3.The jungle peoples also became targets for Communist propaganda, which was particularly effective coming from men they trusted and whom they had known for years.
4.In return the Orang Asli aided the Communist forces by providing porters, guides, food and intelligence on Japanese movement if the latter should venture into deep jungle.
(iii)THE EMERGENCY PERIOD(1948-1960)
1.The success of resettling the Chinese led the authorities to believe that much the same tactics could be used with the Orang Asli in order to deny their support to the Communist.
2.The government's interest in the Orang Asli was seen as critical matter of national security.
3.For the first time, the Orang Asli were the main interest of the British administration.
4.The Government, which formerly ignored and neglected them, now took an active and extemsive interest in Orang Asli welfare and development.
(iv)POST-EMERGENCY PERIOD
1.Jabatan Hal Ehwal Orang Asli was formed
2.In 1961,the newly independent government, through the Ministry of Interior, published a "Statement of policy regarding the administrationof aborigine people of the federation of Malaya.
3.This document reaffirms the new government's intention to continue to protect and recognise Orang Asli rights.
4.But despite these, untill today ,the Orang Asli continue to be one the most marginalised groups in Malaysia.
